Tim Horton’s Breakfast Sandwich

For some time now I’ve been wishing Tim’s stocked something more breakfasty besides a bagel smothered in 6 lbs. of cream cheese, or a croissant. A few months ago, Tim’s introduced the Tim Horton’s Breakfast Sandwich to their US locations and it’s now available in Canada at select locations (for some reason The Toronto Star article says the breakfast sandwich comes on a bun.. it’s actually a tea biscuit). Tim’s has priced their Breakfast Sandwich to be in direct competition with McDonald’s, around the $2.49 mark. I have to admit that Tim Horton’s has to have balls the size of coconuts to take on fast-food breakfast champ McDonald’s, but it’s a logical step for Tim’s, as I’m sure people would love to have a one-stop shop for decent coffee and a fast breakfast.

Coincidentally, I recently went to McDonald’s for the first time in 5 years, and had an Egg McMuffin; I’ll admit it was a guilty pleasure.. and the coffee wasn’t half bad, too.

Greg and I decided to head over to Tim’s this morning to try out the new sandwich, and see what it’s like.

Nik – Breakfast Sandwich with Bacon
Cost: about $4.00 with a large coffee refill.

Tim Horton's Breakfast Sandwich with Bacon

My first impression is that this thing looks like crap.. I’m not impressed. The tea biscuit looks a little burned on the edges, and the whole thing looks really haphazardly thrown together. The egg also looks really fake and molded (which it obviously is). I kind of like that they’re using a tea biscuit instead of the traditional English Muffin, though, it makes for something a little different. It’s also comforting to see that the bacon looks pretty much like bacon from home.

The cheese doesn’t seem to be as heavily processed as an Egg McMuffin’s, so that’s good.. unfortunately, the downside of its ‘realness’ is that it largely drowns out the egg taste; I think they’ve got to strike a better balance in that regard. While the tea biscuit is a novel idea, it was a little too greasy; every time I picked that thing up, my fingers felt like they were just dipped in oil. Tim’s opted to use a scrambled egg in the sandwich, and I have to say I’m not a fan of the texture.. it’s like a weird, stiff-foam kind of feeling which I didn’t find pleasant at all. I know they’re trying to differentiate themselves from McDonald’s, but I really think the sandwich would benefit from a poached egg instead of the current scrambled egg foam.

I really hate to admit this, as I’m a huge Tim Horton’s junkie, but I think that McDonald’s Egg McMuffin is better than Tim’s Breakfast Sandwich; and that’s not really surprising.. McDonald’s has been serving breakfast for over 30 years.  While Tim’s foray into the breakfast world is a decent first-start, I think it really needs some ironing out and perfecting in order to come into direct competition with McDonald’s.

Overall, I’d give the Tim Horton’s Breakfast Sandwich 3/5.

I’ll try to get Greg to write his review of the Sausage Breakfast Sandwich, but he’s a lazy fuck.  So for now here’s a picture of him:

I’d definitely take it over some of the other stuff out there (at Tim’s and other places), but I’m just not digging on the egg texture. Still, I’m more apt to get it and a coffee from Tim’s rather than go to McDonald’s.
I’m going to do a second taste-test sometime soon to see if it was just weird that one time.

Christa: I also tried to find some nutritional info on Tim’s Breakfast Sandwich for the original review, but I couldn’t find any. I’ll actually go to Tim’s and ask them directly if they have any info.

Christa, I have found the information on the Tims site. I’ve compared Tim’s Bacon, Egg, Cheese to the Bacon ‘n Egg McMuffin (in brackets)
    Calories: 400 (310)
    Total Fat(g): 24 (14)
    Saturated Fat: 17 (5)
    Trans Fat: 0.5 (0.3)
    Cholesterol(mg): 165 (195)
    Sodium(mg): 740 (710)

I’m usually a big fan Tim’s and have yet to taste their new addition. I am leary, however, of the egg scramble. I much prefer an egg that I can recognize. That way I know all sorts of goodies haven’t been added to it.

Just a note about the egg itself. It’s a preformed, frozen egg (not completely scrambled, but poured into a circular form and flashfrozen), then baked at high vent (air circ), at 350′ for 12 minutes. It’s interesting. They feel like little hockey pucks when they come out of the box, but taken individually, they’re an innovative idea. I’m a fan of the sandwich, but for a less greasy option try them on bagels (no extra charge, and it’s a lot more filling as well).

Two words Tims SUCKS I’ll add a third ASS! Lets face it Canada has this love affair with Tims thinks its shit don’t stink. Truth be told this AMERICAN company owned by WENDY’S is a fat slagging, artery clogging, caffeine junkie, no better than any other fast food giant. At least McDonalds is what it is, doesn’t hide behind some fake shit. McDonalds packs it full of fat makes it taste good and advertizes the results. Go online to their site or into any location and get the nutrition info up front. Tims is a poser for loser, yuppie wanna be’s and boomers waiting for deaths sweet embrace.

Nageelum: You say that Tim’s is no better than any other fast food giant, then you try and say that McDonald’s is somehow better because it’s ‘up front’, since it provides nutritional information. You can get nutritional information from Tim’s at any of their locations, and on their website. As far as I know, Tim’s has never claimed to be some kind of healthier alternative.

I decided to look into what the worst items on both McDonald’s and Tim Horton’s menues are under the categories of Breakfast and Sandwiches. Here’s what I found:

    McDonalds
    Worst Breakfast item: Big Breakfast
    640 cal
    38g fat
    13g saturated fat
    1g trans fat
    435g cholesterol
    1200 mg sodium

Worst Sandwich: Assorted cold Cuts on a French Roll (with sauce)
    550 cal
    29 fat
    4.5g Saturated Fat
    01.g trans fats
    60g Cholesterol
    1560g Sodium

    Tim Horton’s
Worst Breakfast: Breakfast Sandwich w/ Sausage, Egg, Cheese
    500 cal
    34g total fat
    20g saturated fat
    0.5 trans fat
    185g cholesterol
    920mg sodium

Worst Sandwich: B.L.T (with lettuce, tomato, bacon & mayonnaise)
    450 cal
    18g total fat
    5g saturated fat
    0.1g trans fat
    30g cholesterol
    850g sodium

The verdict? I’ll leave that up for everyone else to decide.

Arguing that McDonald’s is better than Tim Horton’s is like arguing smoking is better than obesity: Both are going to kill you eventually, and it’s probably better to stay away from both, but some people just can’t help themselves.

WELL U NO WHAT MCDONALDS IS THE BEST…and TIM cant even get there…so DO W/E:@

holy people, all FAST FOOD restaurants and places are the same.
You are all going to die from them eventually if you indulge in such crap all the time.
Try not being so lazy and eat HOMEMADE food, if you have enough time to wait in a 20 hour line up (drive through and indoor) then, why not have things prepared the night before so you can slap a sandwich together on the go? It’s much healthier and tastes better than grease-on-the-go

    I do it every morning.

The nigh before I precut my chosen bagel (or bun, bread etc..), take out a piece of cheese, beat 2 egg WHITES (because the yolk is where all the fat is) pour it into a round flat bottomed bowl and cover it with the food plastic wrap stuff.

In the morning I just microwave the eggs for 2 minutes, put it on the the selected bread, place the cheese on top, AND GO!
It takes max 5 minutes to make and you could add ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, MAPLE SYROP, bacon, lettuce, tomato, anything basically that you want to flavour it with.

Just pre-prep before you go to bed. Most of you probably sit on your asses and watch tv before going to bed.
Contribute to your health by standing up off the couch and making a healthy alternative.
Everyone has 5-8 minutes a night to prep. I am a single mother of 3, work from 8-4. If I can find time, you can.

Every Saturday morning, when I go to work, I have a decision to make. No breakfast, McDonalds breakfast or a Timmies breakfast. 8 times out of ten I opt for Timmies, but thats just because I am in love with the Ice Caps.

Did you know, you can have an Ice Cap made with:
    (the Original) 18% Cream
    2% White Milk or
    1% Chocolate Milk.

They all taste awesome, but the Chocolate Milk and White Milk obviously have less in fat content.

    Yumm. :)

Just rtied one of these and it will probably be my last.

The egg was more like powdered egg – like a previous posting – I like an egg to look like an egg and I like a “whole egg”
The sausauge – was there sausage? – didn’t taste it
The biscuit was greasy and crumbled all over the place
And what – no hash potato?

    Mac D – you’re still # 1 – no competition

  15. Mark on

The egg definetly ruins it, I mean its still a decent breakfast, I’m not picky, but if they used a normal egg cooking method as mentioned above, it would be great. I think the Tea biscuits a neat idea.

Just tried TH b-fast sandwich for the first time a couple weeks ago. It tastes amazing — much better than McD’s — and I go there all the time now. Perhaps it tastes better in the States.

I love the new Timmy’s sandwich – yes, even the egg! I would much rather have a Timmy’s breakfast sandwich than a McDonalds egg McMuffin.

Just as some like chocolate and others vanilla – some like McD’s & others Timmy’s…..
…………thank goodness we are not all the same!!!!! How boring would that be!!!!

Tim Horton’s snadwich kicks McDonalds Ass!

Tim Horton’s are sooooo GOOD! You almost don’t mind the extra calories!

some people get overly offended when their choice of poison is dismissed.
I work at tim hortons and through eperimentation found that a double egga nd cheese bfast sandwich (no meat) still comes to the same amount, but tastes a lot better,
the easiest way to order it is “an egg bfast sandwich with an extra egg”
    try it out.

Listen… McDonalds (I’m not gonna lie) Is really really delicious. No one can say it’s not just because they think it’s ‘Gross’ but i know they love it just like everybody else. They don’t want people thinking they’re fat because they say “I like Mcdonalds” ..But it is really unhealthy for you. And Tims is more healthier but again, if you eat it all the time, It will make you fat. Well i was Just wondering if someone could give me the nutrition facts for a Medium Mint Choclate Ice Capp Supreme .. please cause i drink them all the time and my mom says they’re fattening lol so i just wanna know the stats. Please go to my website and vote on the hot or not please Haha im lame

    Nageelum—
Tim Horton’s is still a Canadian company in my mind just because it was founded by a Canadian hockey player (would you guess that his name was Tim Horton?). No one really cares whether an American company like Wendy’s bought it out or not unless we’re planning on investing, it’s simply a Canadian tradition to go to Tim’s. You can overcome your arrogance, I know you can!!!

  22. Ricky on

In my opinon the Tim Horton’s Sandwich has more of a restaurant experience when induldging upon, whereas McDonald, as always, has a on-the-go, cheap-like alternative, don’t mind if i might have the shits after feeling… lol

both ‘taste’ great… Tim’s sandwich is more fulfilling!
